Join us in Welcoming our Summer Intern, Prava Pokhrel!
What a joy it is for me to introduce to you our Summer Intern, Prava Pokhrel. Please welcome back our sweet friend.
Alysa:
Hi Prava, we are so thrilled to have you serve with us as a summer intern. Would you share a little bit about yourself?
Prava:
Hello! My name is Prava Pokhrel, and I am an 11th grader currently in the collegiate academy at Conrad High School in the Health Pathway program. I was born in Nepal at a Bhutanese Refugee Camp on March 23, 2006 and was resettled with my family to the USA in February of 2010. I started Reading Circle in 2013 and participated for 7 years. Some of my fondest memories are from my time in the program. I met a lot of people along the way, made many new friends, and became a better and more fluent English reader and writer. I still remember sitting at a table filled with friends and mentors as we made up stories to write down in our journals. It was fun to see what amazing things we could imagine and conjure into our writings. Serving as an intern now with Refugee Resources, Inc, I look forward to creating new memories as well as reminiscing on the times I spent here. It is exciting to see how much the Reading Circle has grown and to get to be a part of that growth!
Alysa:
If you were to give an upcoming student in Reading Circle any advice for life, what would that be?
Prava:
If I were to give advice, it would be to not compare yourself to others and work hard. As you grow up, you will realize that everyone is different from you. Everyone understands and sees things differently compared to you. If you don’t understand a certain topic while someone else does, that doesn’t make you any less of a person. It just means that you have to work hard and ask questions so that you are able to better understand it. Don’t let anyone, including yourself, think that you are inferior compared to others. You have to be patient, hard working, and determined to achieve your goals. Don’t go astray on the path to success and don’t let others do so either.
Balance is always an important part of life. Reading Circle is a place to learn but also a place to have fun. A saying I heard as a child was, “There is a time for everything.” When you are in Reading Circle, there will be times where you will have to give your utmost and undivided attention to what you are learning and there will be times where you can relax and have fun with your friends. In times when you are learning certain subjects, you should always pay attention and try to understand what others are teaching you. These new things you learn can help you in life and school in particular. I remember being in Reading Circle and learning new words I had never heard before. This helped me grow my knowledge and be more proficient at school. I also had a lot of fun while I was in Reading Circle. I would always encourage people to have fun and be happy. There were times when I was stressed and being in Reading Circle surrounded by people that made me happy helped me reduce my stress. I always think it is important to be disciplined in a way. There will be times when you can have all the fun in the world, and there will be times where you have to be focused and attentive on the things you are doing.
